Weight Management Injections and Contraception/HRT

If you are using GLP-1 Agonists and are also taking oral contraception or oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT), please read the following advice carefully. If you have any questions or would like to review your current medication or contraception, please contact the surgery online.

What are GLP-1 Agonists?

GLP-1 agonists include medications such as tirzepatide and semaglutide which may be better known by their different brand names (see below). They are prescription only medications that may be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional for people with type two diabetes, or to facilitate weight loss. One of the main ways they work is by slowing the rate at which food leaves the stomach (delayed gastric emptying), which can affect how other medicines are absorbed.

Medication  Brand name examples (Commonly known as)
Tirzepatide  Mounjaro
Semaglutide  Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus
Exenatide  Bydureon BCise
Liraglutide  Saxenda, Diavic, Victoza
Dulaglutide  Trulicity
Lixisenatide  Contained in Suliqua

Frequently Asked Questions

HRT and Mounjaro

If you are using oral HRT (e.g. Utrogestan, Norethisterone, Medroxyprogesterone):

    • Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral progestogens.
    • This could mean your endometrium (womb lining) is not properly protected.
    • Please contact the surgery to book a review of your HRT. We may need to increase your dose or switch you to a different form of HRT.

If your HRT is non-oral (e.g. patch, gel, or Mirena coil), this advice does not apply.
