It was Pharmacy Technician Day 2025 this week (21st October).
The day honours the vital contributions of pharmacy technicians to patient care and the healthcare system, but most patients are not aware of who they are, or what they do!
Meet the Medicines Management Technicians (Pharmacy Technicians in GP Practices)
• Medicines Management Technicians (also known as Pharmacy Technicians) are registered healthcare professionals, just like pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and other allied healthcare professionals.
• In Symphony, we use the term Medicines Management Technicians to reflect their role within the Medicines Management Team and to avoid confusion with those working in high street pharmacies.
• They use their training, knowledge and experience from high-street pharmacies or hospital pharmacy, to support pharmacists, GPs, and other staff with all things medication-related.
• A big part of their role involves reviewing hospital discharge summaries and clinic letters to update patient medication records and ensure prescriptions are accurate and up to date.
• They also support Prescription Clerks, who handle prescription requests and queries from patients, care homes, and pharmacies. They help resolve these queries, especially for issues like out-of-stock medications, escalating to pharmacists or GPs when needed.
• Their role is growing! They are starting to support other clinical areas such as hypertension, cholesterol management and more!
At Symphony Healthcare Services, we have Pharmacy Technician teams at four of our practices across Somerset, but they support many of our others too.
